Genius Joy looks like a solid mood enhancing supplement. It offers generous doses of proven, effective suppleemnts which reduce anxiety, lower stress and increase motivation. While it does contain some unproven and ineffective ingredients, it is still a good mood-boosting nootropic.

What is Genius Joy?

Genius Joy is a specialist nootropic supplement from The Genius Brand. This company has established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of brain supplements, health stacks, and general biohacking products in the world. Their main focus enhancing nootropic – Genius Consciousness – is one of the best nootropics on the market right now. Genius Joy is not a normal nootropic; it is as a “serotonin mood booster” for anxiety relief rather than a brain supplement delivering greater attention span or more mental energy.

According to the merchant site, Genius Joy “serotonin mood booster” delivers the following benefits:

  1. Reduced stress
  2. reduced anxiety and mood swings
  3. Enables greater motivation by supporting mental health
  4. Better overall mental wellbeing

So clearly, this is not a nootropic like most other brain supplements. Instead of focusing on memory, focus and mental clarity, Genius Joy is a mood enhancer designed to provide natural anxiety, stress and depression relief. While a reduction in stress and anxiety will definitely promote cognitive function, the primary goal of Genius Joy is suppressing stress and supporting mental wellbeing.

So, does Genius Joy really work? Is it safe to take long-term? How long does Genius Joy last? Is this the best mood boosting supplement on the market right now? I answer all of these questions and more in my full Genius Joy review below.

Genius Joy Ingredients

What is in Genius Joy? This is the most important question for a review to answer, so that’s where I’m going to start. Here is the Genius Joy ingredients list as displayed on the label:

Genius Joy ingredients

Here is a list of Genius Joy’s ingredients and dosages in case that image fails to load:

  • Vitamin D – 1000IU
  • Vitamins B1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 12 – 100% RDI
  • S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) Tosylate Disulfate (as Adomix) – 1000mg
  • N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine – 350mg
  • Rhodiola5Plus Rhodiola rosea extract (3% rosavins, 2% salidrosides) – 300mg
  • Red Panax Ginseng root powder – 250mg
  • HTPurity (Griffonia simplicifolia extract – 95% 5-HTP) – 100mg
  • NeuroFactor (coffee fruit extract) – 100mg
  • L-Theanine – 100mg

That is a very interesting formula. Right away I can see that Genius Joy is targeting both dopamine and serotonin to provide total mood support. There are some questionable ingredients in here, but on the whole this looks like a good formula; it likely enables motivation, improves mood, and reduces anxiety. Let’s go through the ingredients in more detail.

S-Adenosylmethionine Tosylate Disulfate (SAMe) – 1g

SAMe is a very interesting substance. To date, SAMe has been implicated as a potential treatment for liver disease, osteoarthritis, and depression. Studies have found that SAMe consumption reduces depression scores by a clinically significant degree, and a small number of trials found that SAMe improves depressive symptoms to a similar degree to prescription anti-depressants. However, too few stuides exist for meta-analyses to be done. in some trials, SAMe was found to be only mildly effective (i.e. clinically ineffective) for treating depression. None of the studies I have seen compare SAMe directly with standard depression treatments. As such, I don’t think this can really be considered a great Genius Joy ingredient.

That said, SAMe is a definitely an interesting substance with potentially great effects on mood and emotional stability. There is some clinical evidence backing this one up so it is far from a dead weight ingredient!

N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine – 350mg

Tyrosine is a fantastic nootropic and an exceptionally effective motivation booster. Tyrosine is one of the primary building blocks of the neurotransmitter dopamine. While most people think of dopamine as a “reward” signal in the brain, this isn’t correct. Dopamine is more like a motivational driver of behavior; it is released in anticipation of a behavior, which makes us want to do more of it. Raise dopamine and you raise motivation while enhancing cognitive function and improving mood.

Clinical studies have found that Tyrosine supplementation quickly raises dopamine levels. Other trials have found that Tyrosine improves mental performance in people subjected to acute environmental stress (such as cold or sleep deprivation). This makes perfect sense if Tyrosine is increasing dopamine production; it keeps you motivated despite being mentally stressed. The 350mg dosage we get in Genius Joy is substantial.

Rhodiola Rosea – (Rhodiola5Plus) 300mg

Rhodiola rosea is a natural anti-anxiety supplement. It is widely used in the biohacking community as an anxiolytic, and it is frequently added to the best nootropic stacks to provide extra stress support. Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogen; it actively improves your ability to handle both mental and physical stress. Studies[1] have shown that consuming 100-300mg of Rhodiola rosea per day can significantly lower subjective feelings of stress and anxiety, producing a calm, clear-headed state of mind. The 300mg dose we get in Genius Joy is more than enough to fight stress.

Red Panax Ginseng – 250mg

Red panax ginseng is a safe and effective herbal supplement for promote a general state of wellbeing and fighting fatigue. While panax ginseng is far from a powerful nootropic or mood enhancer, it is definitely a great ingredient to have in a stack like Genius Joy, as it promotes general wellbeing and healthy energy levels. Data from large cohort studies shows a reliable improvement in subjective well being following daily panax ginseng consumption.

Griffonia simplicifolia – (HTPurity – 98% 5-HTP) 100mg

Oral 5-HTP is probably one of the most popular “natural” methods of improving mood and reducing the symptoms of depression. The logic states that, as a building block of serotonin, 5-HTP consumption leads to more serotonin synthesis, which improves mood, memory function, and so on. However, I highly doubt that oral consumption of 5-HTP actually leads to a meaningful increase in serotonin. 5-HTP is largely destroyed in the stomach, and any that does make it to the large intestine is poorly absorbed. I therefore think this is a poor choice for inclusion in Genius Joy.

NeuroFactor – 100mg

NeuroFactor is an extremely popular ingredient in nootropics these days, as is coffee fruit extract more generally. You might know this ingredient from Neuriva; the popular nootropic from Schiff Vitamins. The proponents of NeuroFactor claim that this coffee fruit extract (from coffea arabica) provides a special cocktail of polyphenols capable of drastically increasing the output of Brain derived neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the brain. BDNF is a neuropeptide which governs neuron growth, maintenance and proliferation. Studies have found that BDNF influences everything from memory function to mood.

However, there is no reliable evidence that NeuroFactor actually enhances any measure of cognitive function, nor is there any evidence that it promotes BDNF release. All of the existing studies were funded by the manufacturer or someone else with a vested interest in NeuroFactor!

L-Theanine – 100mg

Theanine is an amino acid with some very interesting physiological properties. Theanine is first and foremost an anxiolytic; it seems to actively reduce stress, particularly physical stress and muscular tightness. Theanine also counters some of the worst side effects associated with caffeine: anxiety, hypertension, jitters, and insomnia. I think theanine is generally a good addition to any nootropic stack, but particularly to one designed to promote calmness like Genius Joy is, and a 100mg dose is perfectly adequate.

My take on the Genius Joy formula: Is it good for stress and anxiety?

In my opinion, Genius Joy is a good supplement for improving mood, promoting greater motivation, a better attention span, and overall mental wellbeing.

It is not designed as an executive cognitive function enhancer. That means it does not actively increase focus, memory function, information processing, or reaction times. using Genius Joy will not drastically increase brain energy or eradicate brain fog.

But it will significantly reduce anxiety, which in turn will give you a calm, clear mind with which to focus on your work or education. A calm mind is an effective, focused, productive mind, and Genius Joy looks to have great efficacy as a mind-calming supplement.

That said, Genius Joy is far from perfect.

Genius Joy contains some questionable ingredients which have not been proven to be efficacious for reducing anxiety, controlling stress, or promoting good mental health.

For example, NeuroFactor coffea arabica fruit extract appears to be more of a marketing gimmick than a nootropic; as it stands, I’ve never seen any conclusive scientific research proving that this stuff works as advertised (stimulating the release of BDNF in the brain). Even if NeuroFactor turned out to significantly increase BDNF levels in the brain, a regular coffee drinker will experience the same effects from a cup of hot Java!

There’s also very little evidence that orally consumed 5-HTP increases serotonin availability in the brain. It is likely that 5-HTP is destroyed in the digestive system, and any that remains is poorly absorbed. Tryptophan may be more effective for raising serotonin, but even this is an inefficient process.

SAMe also lacks conclusive proof from meta-analysis and large-scale studies to be considered a reliable antidepressant supplement.

Overall though, Genius Joy looks like a good mood enhancer and a reliable supplement for motivation and anxiety support.

Genius Joy uses effective, quality ingredients. By using a dopamine stack in conjunction with ingredients like S-Adenosyl methionine (SAM-e), Tyrosine and L-Theanine, Genius Joy delivers natural anxiolytic and stress-reducing benefits by maintaining optimal balance of serotonin and dopamine levels.

Genius Joy Side Effects & Safety

Genius Joy is sold as a natural serotonin booster, providing herbal, plant-based, “natural” anti-stress action, anxiety relief and alleviation for symptoms of depression. As it is made from 100% natural ingredients, you might assume that Genius Joy was 100% safe and side effect free.

But “natural” does not mean “perfectly safe”.

Any substance which significantly interferes with serotonin or dopamine levels has the potential to cause serious unforeseen safety issues regarding brain health and mental wellbeing. In particular, SAMe has the potential to negatively impact the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to the very mood swings and anxiety attacks that Genius Joy aims to eradicate.

Genius Joy side effects

Genius Joy users should be on the lookout for the following side effects:

  • Headaches
  • Brain fog
  • Low mood
  • Mood swings
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Skin rashes

To minimize the risk of side effects while taking Genius Joy, avoid taking the supplement on an empty stomach (such as upon waking), and do not mix with any pharmaceutical-grade drugs designed to treat depression or anxiety. If you do experience any side effects (such as low mood, skin rashes, brain fog, or even stomach discomfort), contact customer support immediately.

On the whole, Genius Joy looks like a safe supplement. I think Genius Joy is unlikely to cause side effects for most users, even when using the supplement daily. All of the ingredients have been studied in human clinical trials and have been found to be safe for human consumption.

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease. Genius Joy is not a replacement to prescribed medications used to treat depression or severe anxiety. Individuals currently using anti-depressants (especially SSRIs) should consult with their regular physician before using Genius Joy.

Does Genius Joy promote sleep?

Some Genius Joy reviews posted online by regular users have suggested that the product helps them sleep.

While having lower levels of stress and anxiety would definitely help you get a better night’s sleep, Genius Joy should not be thought of as a sleep supplement. None of the ingredients in Genius Joy actively promote deeper, more restful sleep (apart from L-Theanine).

Genius Joy promote sleep

Genius Joy will assuage symptoms of stress and anxiety, and it may help attenuate the worst symptoms of depression. It should promote motivation and help you maintain a calm mind during times of peak mental stress. But this is not the same as directly promoting sleep.

If you need help getting more deep, restful sleep, purchase a purposefully designed sleep supplement.

Genius Joy Review Conclusion: Is it as good as other stress-reducing supplements?

Does Genius Joy really work?

In my opinion, yes it does! Genius Joy combines some excellent, well-proven and thoroughly effective substances which together improve mood, reduce anxiety and promote a calm, clear mind.

But is Genius Joy the best nootropic on the market today for reducing stress and anxiety?

I don’t think so. It contains too many ingredients which lack solid scientific backing.

SAMe is, as of yet, devoid of any support from large scale meta-analysis or cohort studies, and ti has never been directly compared to standard antidepressants (just placebo). NeuroFactor is a gimmick in my opinion; drinking coffee promotes BDNF levels, so there’s no need to use expensive “extracts” of this common drink.

Oral 5-HTP supplementation is practically pointless too; 5-HTP is destroyed and degraded in the stomach, and all remaining 5-HTP is poorly absorbed in the intestine.

Genius Joy does contain some effective nootropics for reducing stress, preventing anxiety, and boosting motivation, as well as supporting brain function overall. But if your goal is overall enhanced cognition, better stress resistance and reduced anxiety, there are better products out there for sure.
